Among the ecological reserves that Mexico City has is the forest known as Desierto de los Leones and there is the Ex-Convent of Nuestra Señora del Carmen de los Montes de Santa Fe and Site Museum, a construction of the seventeenth century. In 1917 the pre-president Venustiano Carranza named the convent and its surroundings "national park". Since then, the ruins of this magnificent former convent have been restored to welcome visitors who come every year to relive its time of glory. As the Discalced Carmelite friars could not directly hold secular positions, they did so through the León family; hence the name of the place, who for many years represented them in front of the Spanish Crown. The former convent is conceived as a place of spiritual retreat in nature. The cells and oratories where they were given to reflection are preserved, while in the basement there is a hydraulic system. The Chapel of Secrets is a curiosity of monastic architecture, since it only allows auditory contact between two people who are in the same room. The place was a refuge for assailants, a barracks for Zapatista troops and a glass factory. The former convent retains much of its originality such as the cells and oratories where they performed spiritual rites, the basement remains intact, one of the most attractive places in the former convent that today tells thousands of stories and legends.
